Living Wall Systems, Compared
Not all green walls are built the same. Here's how tray, hydroponic, and felt pocket systems differ — and how to pick the right one.
Living walls, or green walls, are beautiful structures that allow plants to be grown vertically both inside and out. Not all systems are created equal — only specific engineered solutions are designed for sustained plant health long-term. Here's a breakdown of the three main systems we work with, and where each one shines.
1. Tray Systems
The simplest green walls to set up and maintain. Plants remain in nursery pots set in 4-inch slots, irrigated every 1–10 days depending on species and light. Plants may eventually become root-bound and require replacement — offering precision management but less design flexibility.

2. Hydroponic Systems
The lightest-weight option. Roots grow directly in capillary fabric with a circulating nutrient solution. Plants grow larger and more vigorously, but the system is sensitive to water and power disruptions and requires a highly trained horticulturist for ongoing maintenance.

3. Felt Pockets
Soil is encased in felt panels — the heaviest system in terms of structural load. Best suited for outdoor applications. Black felt remains visible between plants, and maintenance is the most time-intensive of the three systems.
