Plant Details

The Bird of Paradise plant (Strelitzia nicolai) is one of the most popular house plants in the world for good reason: it is easy to care for and its large, structural leaves bring style and grace to any setting. Bird of Paradise exhibits tall stalks carrying broad green leaves with a glossy finish and often produces new leaves. It is common for older leaves to tear and curl over time.

While it is tolerant of short periods of drought, it will do best with consistent moisture; just be careful not to over water. If not purchasing this lovely plant in a self-watering container, we recommend adding on a water globe to your order to help ensure moisture consistency.

Have a container picked out already? Want to plant the tree yourself? Don't mind a little dirt on the floor?

This option is for the bare plant in its nursery grow pot. The nursery pot can be placed inside of a larger container or can be removed to plant your specimen directly. Please note this is not considered a finished pot.

    SERVICE AREAS
Greenery NYC delivers to the following locations:

    • Manhattan
    • Brooklyn
    • Queens

Greenery NYC offers next day delivery for orders placed before 12pm Monday through Friday. We do not deliver on Sundays, so orders placed Saturday will go out the following Monday. In case of inclement weather, we will automatically reschedule deliveries for the next day we deem safe for the health of the plant, and will send out a notification email with the updated schedule.

Someone must be available to receive the delivery. If no one will be there to receive the delivery, you may give us permission to leave the plant outside the delivery address in the checkout notes. However we cannot acquiesce this request during the winter or in severe weather. If no one is there to receive the delivery and we are unable to leave it behind, a re-delivery fee will be incurred. Cancelled orders will incur a 20% restocking fee once they have been prepared for delivery.

  • Light Requirements

This is a medium light plant. It will do best in a bright location with mostly indirect light. This would be directly in front of a North or East facing window. It will also thrive 5ft-10ft removed from a West or South facing window.

Please note that obstructions can cause a considerable decrease in the available light. Windows facing other buildings or alleys, especially on the bottom floors, are particularly susceptible.

The surest way to see if your space receives the light required for an indoor plant is to take a light meter reading. Please see our Lighting Guide for instructions.

  • Plant Care

The Bird of Paradise is a semi tropical plant native to the subtropical regions of Asia and New Guinea. It can withstand brief periods of drought between waterings, and it thrives in medium to higher light spaces.

    CARE LEVEL
    Easy.

    WATER REQUIREMENTS
Be sure to water your plant upon delivery. Bird of Paradise prefer moist (but not soggy) soil. Try to never let the soil dry completely, but be careful not to over water. Generally, it is optimal to water when the top 2" - 3" of the soil are dry.

    HUMIDITY PREFERENCE
Bird of Paradise love humidity and will reward regular misting with profuse growth. However, they are very adaptable to dry spaces. Be sure to place your plant away from hot or cold air drafts.
