Sansevieria is a genus of about 70 species of flowering plants native to Africa, Madagascar and southern Asia. Within this genus species vary greatly, ranging from desert succulents to thinner leafed tropical plants. Sansevieria trifasciata, commonly referred to as the snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, has been found to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene and toluene from the air via a process called Crassulacean acid metabolism.
Sansevieria thrives on neglect, having earned its nickname as the “unkillable” plant. However it’s sensitive to overwatering, which can cause this plant to rot.
