The Language of Flowers

The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, was a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be said. A friend recommended that I should read Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s novel “The Language of Flowers”, and I completely fell in love. I was captivated by the notion of communicating feelings with flowers. If your looking for a good book that’s a light read I highly recommend!

Take a look at our album of flower pictures and their hidden meanings! Enjoy.

Fun things to do to celebrate Arbor Day in NYC this weekend!

A little history for you on how Arbor Day originated: Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. By the 1920s, each state in the United States had passed public laws that stipulated a certain day to be Arbor Day or Arbor and Bird Day observance.

The national holiday is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April; in Nebraska, it is a civic holiday. Each state celebrates its own state holiday. The customary observance is to plant a tree. On the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted.

Here is a list of things you can get involved with this weekend:

Spring is in the Air

Though this March is certainly colder than last year, now is the time to get started on spring-time garden clean up. In the Greenery Garden in Bushwick we’re pruning our raspberries, adding in bonemeal and compost around our rose beds, and cleaning up lots of debris that managed to find its way into the garden over the winter. We’re also trimming back our fig and plum trees before they begin to bud. Fruit trees get very stressed if they are pruned in warm weather, so you want to be sure to do any major cutting while they are still dormant. Greenery NYC offers spring clean up maintenance, so if you don’t have the time or inclination to get out and get to work in he next few weeks, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to help!

Helebores, one of the first spring blooms, are opening up.

Pollinators are starting to come out too. Check out the pollen sack that this honey bee has collected off of a Salix (pussy willow)!

Loving these pale crocus!

Upcoming Terrarium Workshop

Join Greenery NYC and Yummy Eats for a brunch workshop on Sunday, March 25th!

Every apartment could use a few plants, but not everyone’s thumbs are as green as their aspirations. A terrarium is a great way to introduce a little lushness, often with minimal effort. Terrariums are self-contained ecosystems, and can be packed with plants that require very little to survive. Join us for a special workshop this March and learn how to build and maintain verdant miniature environments in glass. This workshop covers basic techniques of design, construction, and maintenance of terrariums. Each student will be provided the glass, soil, plants, and decorative finishes to create an original terrarium.

Yummy Eats will be available before, during and after the workshop. Food is complimentary to all participants and a la carte to everyone else.

On the menu:

*granola, greek lemon yogurt, fresh fruit parfait
*roasted potato medley w/ red pepper aioli
*cajun shrimp & cheesy grits
*crab cake slider w/ eggs, tomato, pico de gallo & aioli
*american morning slider w/ bacon, egg & cheese

Unplug in the Evening in Your Night Garden

It’s hard to imagine Spring is only a couple months away, considering it feels like Winter has just begun. Hopefully this post about Night Gardens will give you a much needed ray of warmth…

Greenery NYC is thrilled to be teaching a Night Garden class at BBG.
Learn about white-flowering plant choices that shine after dark and gorgeous night bloomers that release their fragrance into the twilight. We’ll discuss basic garden design principles for creating lush and inviting spaces, including outdoor lighting suggestions.

The concept of the night garden is not new. In medieval Japan moon gardens were designed using white-colored rocks and light sand. Water pools would catch the light of the moon to help the flowers, such as white chrysanthemums, shine even brighter. In the 1600s India’s emperor planted a stunning night- blooming garden using fragrant and beautiful flowers like night blooming jasmine, narcissus, and lilies―all in white.

So whether it’s moon flowers or Angels’ Trumpet, Greenery Night Gardens will help create a stage for those magical spring and summer evenings. Even if you have ample time to enjoy your garden during the day, why not extend your viewing pleasures into the night. Garden-lovers with limited space can easily enjoy their container, balcony or patio moon gardens long after dark.
